I have the need for speed!!

After 7 months of happy D70 ownership, I've finally discovered what everyone was saying was right There is no substitute for wide aperture lenses. Despite the horrendous costs that Nikon decides to inflict on us for quality glass, well, that's why they call it "quality glass"...

I'd forgotten so much that I'd learnt from using film SLR's in the 10 years between film and the D70. I dismissed the need for fast glass by rationalising that I could bump up the ISO or use VR to compensate. Good in theory, but I've had a quiet work week, so therefore a busy photography week. What I've learnt this week is that whilst I can capture a sharp image with virtually any lens, no amount of PP will give me the DOF or bokeh that I require to make my pics something better than "snapshots" without the right glass... (Landscapes excluded). I've thrown away more images this week than I care to think about for want of a couple of stops.

Mmmm, looks like I'll be spending some money  PS: I know that many of the world greatest photos were taken with little better than pinhole cameras, but I'm no Ansel Adams

Well John, congrats on admitting your problem... scratch that, you've become enlightened! I bet your week of photography was a journey of self discovery that's brought your attention to the need for faster glass - in essence, finding a solution to a photographic problem (not many issues can be solved with buying gear, but this is legitimately one of them).

So what's it gunna be: the 17-55 or 28-70 question or 70-200VR one?!

I've been reading many posts in this forum which people mentioned they do not need the fast glasses as I advised.
Oh yeah! now you may discover why I'm always sourcing the fastest glasses if I can. If you can't afford them today, save up and get them later.

You're right, there is nothing like a fast lens! I'm on a small budget and I have a 50mm f/1.8, it's a top lens to experiment with depth of field in portrait situations. And from about f/4, it also gives incredibly clear and sharp pictures.

I assume you are saying that you want less DoF, because that is what a larger aperture will give you.

I have 12-24, 24-120 VR and 70-200VR (all Nikon glass) and a 50/1.4 I find this is a very useful combo. When I want fast I have the 70-200 or the 50 and I have the full range covered amongst the lenses. Why the 24-120? Well the VR is a bonus and it's range is great for walking around.

I am thinking about getting the Nikkor 28-70mm as my future main lens
because it's robust, built like a tank, has an f/stop of 2.8 and can be used as a weapon if an assailant decides to try their luck.

I have read alot of reviews and alot of people are sitting on the fence on this one, mainly because it's not a DX lens and that it is old and heavy, in favour of the 17-55 which is a DX lens specifically made for DSLR's
