 Degree of difficulty: 9.
That's what I'd say of the image that Daniel_r posted as a part of this thread .
Being able to get the text on the bulb's surface is a difficult taks - the glass is highly reflective, the bulb is illuminated and thus the contrast range through this image is severe.
But he's done it, and done it bloody well too.
 Congratulations, Daniel; well done.g.Gary Stark

Well done Daniel, congrats on POTW !
That reminds me of a DECISIVE MOMENT I had once... *though I didn't capture the text on the globe as you have.
 Certainly great control of exposure.DaveNikon D7000 | 18-105 VR Lens | Nikon 50 1.8G | Sigma 70-300 APO II Super Macro | Tokina 11-16 AT-X | Nikon SB-800 | Lowepro Mini Trekker AWII

Good work Daniel, interesting and technically impressive.
From a global perspective, it is good to have some lighter subject matter.

Impressive. I can't even shoot glass (working on it though!), let alone glass lit from the inside
 Well Done

That's very clever, Daniel. Congratulations. Now, how did you stop that inevitable glare.

We better all get some pictures of these light globes because in a couple of yours (3) you wont be able to buy them in Aust any more. Will be replaced with low watt, energy saving kind. D50 - AF-S NIKKOR 18-70mm 3.5-4.5G ED

 Wow!! What a pleasant surprise!
Thanks for the comments everyone As a couple of people have mentioned, the getting the exposure right was an exercise in itself, an certainly a worthy one.
The reflections were taken care of with a bit of lens/subject arrangement and much perseverance.
I used manual focus with the assistance of my Ray-Bans - you do start to see spots after a bit otherwise! Greg B wrote:From a global perspective, it is good to have some lighter subject matter.
 Greg, that really is puntastic!

Hate to be the spanner in the works but I don't quite get all the fuss?
I can't say I find anything particularly appealing about this image. Could just be cos I had a loooong, stress-filled jewellery shooting day!
Please don't take this as an attack, just wondering if it's POTW worthy? PS - anyone else notice the vertical banding? Down and to the left of the globe.

POTW is whatever the mod / admin choses when it's their week. Each has their own method, criteria etc.. I wouldn't expect us all to agree with their choices.. infact looking back in last years POTY gallery.. there were a handful that I would not have considered myself (if I was choosing).
So I don't think it throws a spanner in the works if you don't get it, coz I don't think we have to "get it" all the time.
As an aside I think and I'm just guessing that the technical difficulties of taking a shot like this is one of the reasons why it was picked, its also fairly unusual (not a macro, landscape, portrait.. more standard shot posted).. but I've rambled enough..

 Liam,
I welcome your discussion on this matter. There's no rule that says that anyone who picks any PotW is a guru; the only guidance I give the mod s is ... choose whatever you like. The same (naturally) would apply to me as well.
That you - or anyone else - might not consider the image worthy is perfectly acceptable to me. I happen to think that the technical issues that needed to be overcome in order to produce this image merit its selection.
If people want to discuss this ... that's the purpose of this thread.
FWIW, I had three other images under consideration.
No, I'm not telling. g.Gary Stark

Yeah interesting choice, but i too cannot see what appeals about the said image......but well done to the recipient!
But POTW is VERY important and should be kept........MOST are stunners.

POTW is POTW, no one ever said it was going to be the best picture of the week.. I often enjoying seeing what is selected because it gives an idea about the diversity within the forum. Often I miss the original post because I may not have found the caption inviting.. This fits the bill in my humble opinion and congratulations on it being selected. Canon

It's not going anywhere; don't you worry about that, Dan.
And it's not necessarily about being a "stunner". Often it may well be, but that is not what it's about. We've certainly had hot and heavy discussion about some images in the past, and that is a good thing.
But for those who don't understand why I've selected this image, I will ask them to do just one thing: please try to duplicate it. g.Gary Stark
