POTW 19 September 2006

Each week, one of the moderators or administrators selects an image that, for whatever reason, catches their eye. Please feel free to add your comments here. Vigorous discussion of the images and techniques is welcome and encouraged. Criticism of any mod for their choice is not. Please note that this is "Picture of the Week"; do not confuse that with "best picture of the week", which is a concept of which we have no understanding.

POTW 19 September 2006

Choosing POTW this week was quite a challenge. As well as the usual high standard of work seen here from our members on any given week the Sydney Portrait Workshop saw a spike in the number of excellent portraits submitted for critique.

However only one image can be chosen and this week's image is by Brisbane member Rel AKA blacknstormy. When I asked her if it was OK for her image to be chosen her response was "I would love it to be POTW, but don't feel that it should be ..... I only took the photo of the flame and then played in PS - maybe if we had digital manipulation of the week". That for me is the real point of POTW. It's not just about technical merit or if it's a wonderfully framed and composed image captured in camera - it is also about the impact of the shot. For me the image below is a very high impact shot. Rel wanted to make a statement about global warming and the challenges we face. She came up with a concept, sourced the image of our planet (as much as she may have liked to take it herself :wink: ) and photographed the flame. Then she used her image manipulation skills to create what is a powerful and elegant picture to convey her message.

Wow Rel! I missed this the first time around. Very different image and well chosen Peter. It is indeed representative of the fact that we are burning up our world, with global warming etc etc. Nice PP and very creative. Congrats on POTW or DMOTW :)

Rel,

This image was a natural for PotW, your comments notwithstanding.

Peter, thank you for your insight into how you came to your decision for selection of this image. That sort of discussion is very valuable, as it permits all of to understand the sort of processes you went through in order arrive at this most worthy choice.

The depth of your thinking, and the issues encountered, are most worthy, and most worthy of discussion.

Rel this image has an original concept behind it and has been well composed - it doesn't matter that the final result came down to PP - you had a good idea and brought it to life. Well done.

Fantastic shot Rel, I had missed the thread, and very glad I didn't miss this one completely.

One of the great strengths (in my view) of PotW is - No rules. It really creates opportunities for all manner of shots to be displayed and appreciaetd.
