Picture Of The Week - September 12 2006

Each week, one of the moderators or administrators selects an image that, for whatever reason, catches their eye. Please feel free to add your comments here. Vigorous discussion of the images and techniques is welcome and encouraged. Criticism of any mod for their choice is not. Please note that this is "Picture of the Week"; do not confuse that with "best picture of the week", which is a concept of which we have no understanding.

Picture Of The Week - September 12 2006

Ah, how time flies. It has come around to my turn for POTW again! Looking through the work posted by our members this week fills me with awe at the skills of our community... really the only reason why more of us don't go pro is because we don't want to, because the quality of the work here surpasses the work of many paid photographers...

First let me drag up an old image that, even though posted some time ago I was seriously considering: Mudder's Mt Buffalo shots If you have not seen them go take a look!

I particularly liked the 2nd image of Wendellt's GOR trip series as well the 3rd image from his Backstage @Brisbane FW pt1

But in a week where I have been obsessing over work related issues, like many of us probably, I decided upon an image that puts it all into perspective:

Humbling isn't it? Nature is always bigger and just plain outright more spectacular! Ok, the main thing that makes this image great is the subject however, JordanP has captured this well. Using leading lines in the storm and the lay of the land to frame this gust front. And doing extensive PP work to handle the highlight.

This is a great shot, very worthy of POTW.

I have seen a number of storm fronts like this (always when I am without camera), and it is very humbling. Awesome stuff!

Thanks to all for the kind comments. As Scott has already said the contributors on this forum do some amazing work. It is humbling to be counted among them on this occasion.

This one however – kudos must go to nature not the photographer. This shot is more about being in the right place at the right time. For others on this day it was more like being in the wrong place at the wrong time. This storm left much devastation in its wake – fortunately no fatalities (that I heard of), but some close calls and a multitude of insurance claims.

When you get the chance to see such an awe inspiring sight, the only risk in missing the photo opportunity (when you are at home with all your gear handy), is just being mesmerised and completely forgetting to take the photo!
