PotW March 21, 2006

Last week James M posted some images from a balloon ride he took through Canberra. Many people commented on the brilliant colours in the second image in that series, and that was truly a wonderful, colorful image.

But the next image in that series presents a very different perspective of our Federal Parlaiment House, which is arguably one of this country's most recognisable icons.

Apart from the unusual viewpoint, the early morning lighting and the composition all combine to make this image my selection for this week's PotW.

Although I'm surprised they were allow to fly over it? I would of thought there would be restricted airspace around government buildings such as this.

No, perhaps the current govt. needs to get someone to demolish it free and rebuild another one same as adding more fuel to their anti-terrosism heat.

And I agree with the comments above, can you imagine balloons full of people floating over the white house or the capitol? Really, as much as I love the fact that Australia remains less paranoid, this really seems ill advised to me.

Just imagine the devastation of a kamakaze ballon hitting those concrete walls at full speed. I wonder if the architect designed the building to withstand such a devastating impact

Congratulations. The real appeal to me with this is, as Gary says, it's unique perspective. And on the matter of bombs - would we be any worse off it it did happen. We'd only lose politicians and there are plenty more where they came from

We don't care if we have to use them as baits for fishing.

But we do care if there are more funding available for them to carry on their pursuits, and we better reserve those resources for school, hospital and other social services. BTW, sorry, I'm driving this to OT.

I'm quite sure that the fish would find them at least as distasteful was we do, and would probably just spit them out.

Very nice photo here, striking actually, took a long time to load on my (son's) PC but worth the wait. The light is wonderful, the lines are crisp.

but the potw is great and original too

Google Earth, eat your heart out As others have mentioned, it's the unique perspective that makes this image really sing. Sharp, well-exposed and nicely composed... A good opportunity captured perfectly. Nice work!

and if I manage to get to Balloon Fiesta in April I will make sure the battery is fully charged in the camera so I end up with a few more pics than I did on the first ride ....

James well done. I forwarded a link to your original post to your pilot Alan and he was well pleased.

The flag pole has long been a 'target' for balloonists - once upon a time there was a photo of me hanging onto it whilst suspended from a 'Cloudhopper' backpack balloon (1990 festival) . I tried to ensure that all copies were destroyed. It was one of those 'special' days.

great shot, good work, would have been a great morning to be at altitude.

I was taking some night shots from one of the outer lawns in Canberra when a couple of federal officers on pushbikes rocked up and questioned me. Large black manfrotto with a 300mm black lens on a black camera, late at night ... i guess you can see why
