Flash or no flash?

Need everyone's opinion on what looks better?

Neither of these photos work well in my opinion. For that ambient light, I would use flash, but bounce it and/or get the flash off camera.

Lighting, particularly portrait lighting is a whole giant can of worms.

The best website I know looking at lighting (mainly flash) is David Hobby's Strobist site: http://strobist.blogspot.com/ In particular look at his lighting 101 (top right of the home page)

The best lighting book, or source of any kind for that matter,that I know is "Light Science & Magic" I bought mine in Dymocks but it shows up on all the usual online sources as well.
