Something on Thom Hogan's site http://www.bythom.com revived a curious thought. Why D70? What made Nikon pick that number....it never really fit with the scheme in a numerical sense. I was snooping about the US trademark / patent website and found some interesting things. D200 is already a registered trademark...as were d60, 80, and 90. 50 and 70 are now Nikons.....300 is available. Wonder if the d300 will replace the d100.

Is this a pointless rant or WHAT!!!!

Who has the patent to D80?

I dunno, haven't had much experience with other cameras but this camera feels like it should of been called the D80. As it feels like a digital version of my F80.

Those all Dxxx will be coming soon thru Nikon in the "very" near future, you'll be once Nikon announced its entirely range in the 05 & 06.

There is a Texas company named Pileco that has mos of the other Dxx trademarks.

Nikon can still use Dxxx names taken by the other companies as long as those compaines are in the photographic field.

I would assume the Nikon would never use D300 being so close to that other company.

Someone should teach Canon how to name their cameras. The entire Eos Mark II D s thing is extremely confusing and pointless. Is it really that difficult. How about the ist D? What a poor excuse for name. I must say that D70 works on a simple level. It sort of rolls off of the tongue and is distinguishable from the other brands. If I were in charge I'd start calling them "Maverick", "Mrmeany" and "Clicky"

Grammar error on my behalf,

"as long as those compaines are not in the photographic field."

an example would be Leica M3 and BMW M3

Olympus was originally going to call their OM1 the M1 but could not because of Leica.
