ordered a sensor from these guys http://www.lifepixel.com/digital-infrared/instructions.html and did the conversion myself, cost was about $160 all up

I converted a d70 myself some timeback (but with a lee filter) the process is easy, just be very carefull.

The filter you get is the most important (and hard to find) thing. The filter in the one above looks as though it is still letting in some visible light like the hoya r72 does.

I sent my d70 to Daveb who then change it to one of the filters he sources and the results are better it a filter that blocks all visible light so the images are purely black and white. Enjoy

yes i only ordered the filter, installation was a easy using their diy guide, i had to take it apart three times as the first time it was focusing but not writing to the card, the second time it was writing to the card but it was coming up completely white, so i fiddled with the connections ( didn't know what i was doing ) and then surprisingly ( for me ) i got a picture ! i used to take ir with my sony717 but they were long exposures so if a tree was moving in the wind it wasnt real sharp but this way i can handhold the camera

At the moment I just using a r72 and yes you need a very still day.

Interesting- what kind of speeds are you able to shoot at now?

I like the idea and currently use an r72- although I dont have on old DSLR lying around!! Even used prices on old Canon still seem higher than I want to pay. i might just convert/cannibilise my P&S canon s80.

I have read that the Olympus 2020 and nikon 950 (both 2MP compacts) are the ones to get if you use an external filter and still want to be able to hand hold. I am a little concerned about how big you can print with such a small res image.

My D70 seems to be working again as i think the problem was a dodgy CF card.

this pic was taken at 1/160 @6.3 getting the exposure right is a bit tricky
( take one check histogram etc. ) and making sure the sun is shining on the subject, going to have fun with this !

robw25 - I am surprised that you converted the D70 instead of the D2x Seeing that you can not get sharp shots out the D2x, but can from the D70. BTW: nice IR

Rob, might as well go out and use the 200-400, will disguise the focus problems!!
