Hmmm...I'm guessing that RRP (AUD $1700-1900)

Will it be just as good as the 80-400 for it's speed in focussing?!

Thats a rip-off

You can get a AFS 300/4 for $1400AUD which I believe (not sure yet) quality is way better despite the VR.

Gee I got all excited until I read Geoff's comment about the aperature.
Bummer. Think I'll just stick to the planed purchase of the 80-400vr for the extra reach and put up with having to shoot in favourable light.

Good to see that Nikon keep throwing the toys our way though.

Now THAT one is interesting, Gary. Perhaps it will be the "new kit lens" for the D80? Hopefully the quality is as good as the 18-70.

Don't know about the 70-300VR though. I'll wait for reviews, and for a feel of one myself before I decide. I suspect I'll stick with my 80-200/2.8 though

Coming back to the 70-300VR, does that mean its an updated 70-300ED and therefore will suffer from similar softness issues at the long end?

The link indicates that it is an internal focus lens, but the filter size is the same as the old 70 - 300, so I think we will just have to wait and see.

2 ED glass elements
Plus Af-S, VR, IF, 9 bladed diaphram

versus

Does anyone know if any of the Nikon teleconverters work with this new lens. The online stores that sell them don't brag about that function like they do with some of the others.

Less than $1000 is a steal for this lens. (I reckon.)

f4.5 - f5.6 dependent on the zoom.

Not much point to a TC then, unless you're shooting in really bright light.

I like the 67mm filter size too.

This lens is so different to the existing 70 - 300s. Minimum focus distance stays constant throughout the zoom. Nice.

How am I going to sneak this one past my wife?

I learned everything I know about sneaking by people from playing Splinter Cell.

(I died very early on so I'm not very good at it. You might be better.)

For the moment, be more concerned about where you might find one. There are none, to my knowledge, in captivity as yet.

DC cameras says 1 to 2 days. (I don't believe them if Ken Rockwell can't get one until December 7...)

I have a 24-120 VR that needs a longer buddy. A sharper buddy too...

Looks to me like Nikon are putting VR into as many new lenses as they can.

Has anyone picked up this lens yet?

I was thinking - as opposed to selling my 80-200 and getting the 70-200VR, I'd get this to supplement the 80-200 instead. VR when I need it, the speed of the 80-200 when I don't. Plus when I'm shooting with the 70-300VR, it's less weight to lug around.

I handled one yesterday at DCW, and it wasn't as featherweight as the 70-300G, it felt nicely put together and quite substantial in mass - in a separate class to the 'G' lens. 9 bladed diaphram should be good news for bokeh; but the f/5.6 max aperture doesn't sound too crash hot.

I'm reading of favourable reviews of this lens elsewhere, and with it retailing for >$US500, it doesn't seem too overpriced here in $AU either.

I have been thinking about picking one up, but have yet to actually take the plunge.

If I do pick one up I will be sure to post my findings ...

I have had mine for a little while now (since January).I'm very happy with it and paid $900 which i thought was pretty good value, the f/5.6 isn't that good and 2.8 would have been great but i like the extra 100mm. Here are some panning shots from a drift night where the lighting was very bad all shot at 1/25 or 1/30 at ISO800 no flash.

The VR function should go some way into assisting you in using slower shutter-speeds....theoretically bringing it closer to an f2.8 lens (though not technically the same).

For the price, it looks like it would be an attractive lens for alot of people (IMO)
