With the capabilities of that sensor, they could have done a lot more for an "upgrade" in my opinion.
That said, I like this option I read:
D2Xs settings can be saved and loaded within the camera
That could be quite nifty.

if the sensor had been upgraded to 24 pixel that would be a significant upgrade

I think that even if Nikon DID have a 24MP sensor, they'd be sitting on it until the D3 is out.
This seems to be very similar to the small minor upgrades like the D70-D70s etc. People buying new are happy to be getting a "newer model", but existing owners won't bother upgrading.

At a glance it appears that the D2Xs gets a few minor (relative to a major design change) hardware and a lot of firmware improvements.

Nikon will have a need in taking care of their Pro Body/Flagship customers...typically a firmware upgrade will not bring the D2x up to the "s" stage but business you would not do so until all stock was gone

Granted. Perhaps I worded that a little loosley. Maybe sometime after the release of the D2Xs... In a similar vein to the improvements in the D70 firmware v2.
Nikon did also make some improvements to one of the D1 models (I cannot remember which) through firmware some time back, so the possibility of something similar for the D2X may not be entirely out of the question.
Cheers

The salesmen will be salesmen and some poor sod will buy it thinking that it is the latest and greatest and that they are getting it at the best price.

D70 - D70s
D2H - D2Hs

Would have to be the D2H to D2Hs, a major improvement in ISO
Which is why I waited and very glad I did.
