Noticed that there are a lot D100's for sale on Ebay at realy good prices,
some of them with very low shutter activations, wonder if it is a good idea as a second body?

It would depend if you really need a second body...only you decide that and the price is I guess.

Even if it was going for $700 I would go for a new 12-24mm or 85mm would be my choice. But you are not me

If this is your profession or moving into it...a second body could be a safty net.

I have two, so I know a little about the build quality. Not a D1 0r D2 series but it is very well built for a semi pro or a pro's second body.

Why do I have two one was lost and the insurance paid for a new one. It was lost during transit as checked baggage. Then 6 months later the insurance company rang and said they got it back from Qantas and I can keep it for $500.

So I said yes.

The two D100 i believe have done over 16,000 and over 30,0000 shutter activation. One had a replacemt shutter asemmbly a year ago (my original 2002 purchase) , the maxwell engineer said it was rare failure on the d100. .

So I think the shutter would be a less of a issue.

But take note...D100 does not have a shutter counter like D70. So Like me the seller is guessing.

Yes, go for it! the D100 is one of robust DSLR body which Nikon made.
Second body is a good back up.

Agreed with ipv6ready, the D100 does not shutter count as the D70.
Haven't seen much of the D100 failure rate in the pass!
The D70 is higher and the D200 is now appearing with few negative reports accross other forums.

The D100 is a great body, use it myself. New ones (not many left) still retail over $2k so $800 would be a bargain.

Like any used DSLR camera, you need to ensure that the CCD is in mint condition. Personally, I wouldn't buy any DSLR 2nd hand unless I could shoot several images in RAW, then look at them in "actual pixel" mode to ensure that all pixels are operational.

One thing I like for the D100 is the ability to turn off hot pixels.

I do have the pixel bootleg CCD Pixel remap program for the D100 to turn off hot pixels and the AC Adapter that is required. Did not have a reason to use it yet but it is an option.

It's standard with the D100 and I have the D100 as well, still keep it althought I also have the D2h + D2x.
The first generation of the Nikon DSLR as D1 series and D100 are great bodies in comparison to the newest.

Anytime....I am not going away soon. It comes with a big warning to "Technician"...that you can damage CCD etc if you lose power. The program is reportedly a leaked program used by nikon. I downloaded from Nikonian and was a big thread once on the site, i guess its like the big hoopla about DIY ccd clean a few years ago.

Great little program. you can even realigh the lcd display if its off center
