I was on my way home when something of interest come over the scanner.
anywho i got my sigma 70 - 200 2.8 out and pumped the ISO up to 800 spot metering shutter at about 20 and all that anyway i got the pics home and some of the images have banding in them and its pretty obvious too!
whats the go with this is it normal on a d70 or is mine playing up?

sorry for the large pic in the screen
Also bare with the image as it was hand held.

Banding is usually caused by underexposure. When you spot metered, what was the source of your metering? Seem like the paramedic uniforms to me as the cop uniforms were blown, could result in the background being under exposed.
Compare the exif to the other acco photos you took in the past and see if they are similar.

I wacked the Ev +2 up in nickon capture to make the banding more visible
I wasn't really worried about getting a decent pic rather showing the banding. I was under the impression banding occured during long exposures and what not. I certainly didn't think it would happen under these circumstances on my d70

Whooops sorry I got you confused with Xerubus

No your camera isn't on it's way out...the image was under exposed.

Looks to me like a misfire.
I get this every so often. Maybe a couple times a year or so. If it keeps happening, I'd send it in under the warranty.

So the most likely cause of this is underexposure?
I really hope thats the case :S

I'm probably showing my ignorance here, but what's a misfire

Cheers

Its a term I invented. every so often something funky happens. Wicked beam of green streaking through the shot, wicked heavy bands. I call them misfires, and they happen to me every so often. I live with it as it doesn't seem to be that big a deal.

I really am an idiot sometimes.
I was going through the pics and applied +.80 Ev to one of the images and saw the banding and thought what the hell.
there isnt any banding on the other images I think I just made a stupid mistake!
thanks for your help everyone.

I get this in every image that has darker areas, even if it's taken at ISO 200. It is however more noticable at night and with longer exposures. I believe it is normal though.

I see you got some good advice from dpreview as well

It seems it happens when pumping up the shadows, although I've never spotted the effect on my shots - I must look harder!
Cheers
