SATURDAY, AUGUST 13 Practice fly-bys of Lake Burley Griffin by aircraft involved in the
next day's air displays. Three military bands on the shores of the lake, with dance troops, a 200-person choir, music from the 1940s, and five big screens featuring scenes from both the front line and at home during World War II. Big screen entertainment will also include interviews with World War II veterans.





Static displays of military and civilian vehicles of the 1940s. Reception for invited veterans in the Great Hall of Parliament House. SUNDAY, AUGUST 14 Ecumenical church service.
On-ground entertainment similar to the previous day on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin.

Midday to 1pm: First of three air displays. Australian and NZ paratroopers will fall from the air to start the show, which will include vintage aircraft and helicopter demonstrations.

2.30pm to 4.30pm: Display featuring 25 different types of aircraft ending with a navy helicopter flying an Australian flag. Will include an in-air demonstration of a Boeing 707 refuelling F111 and F18 aircraft.
5.25pm to 6.10pm: Spectacular twilight display starting with a routine from the Roulettes aerobatic team. An F111 aircraft will then complete a simulated strike to spark a fireworks display that will spread across the lake.
A Howitzer volley will precede a Lockheed C130 dropping flares over the lake before a
final F111 ''dump and burn'' display - in darkness with an illuminated
Parliament House in the background. MONDAY, AUGUST 15 Service at the Australian War Memorial to commemorate

I would but im going to be running my bum off between the airport and the lake, catching the aircraft leave the airport and then doing they're routines!

Although you may bump into me, look for someone with a D70 and a bright yellow (and i mean bright hehe) neck strap

ok i'll just explain it, my artistic skills seem to be somewhat lacking

for afternoon stuff

when u get to the airport, head right pass the caltex server. go straight after the stop sign. just after that is middle carpark. you can get shots of aircraft taxiing past and also shots of aircraft on the runway

just beside this carpark is a hangar... keep going further down the road, there is another carpark.. can also get shots of aircraft taxiing past and also shots of aircraft on the runway. *also* if u goto the end of this carpark (as far south as you can go), there is a little gully then a elevated area where u can shoot over the fence line

Also, if you head up Majura Ave there is a airport gate at the near the end of the fenceline. Planes taxi straight towards you here

BUT this spot will only be good if they are using that end of the runway for arrivals and departures, generally its the other end so the other two spots are much better

For morning stuff

Anywhere along the fairbarn side of the airport. Just stay away from the RAAF VIP area and you will be fine. See below about security

Now.. some general do's and dont's

If u are going up to the fence to take photos, take the photo then move away.. do not hang around the fence. there is a rule that says you must be 3 meters away from the fence - so take the shot then move back.

If you are going to take a ladder, it MUST be 3 meters away from the fence at all times.

Also, you will probably get a visit from the APS at some stage. Be polite and dont be a smartarse, they are only doing they're job. If they request you move on, do so.

I'd love to help you with that one, however I don't know the aircraft's flight directions. It is a matter of their direction, position of the sun, time of day.
In the past a good viewing point is one being lined up with the AWMA and Parliament House, however there are fences towards the lake' s edge.
I guess you will be able to figure it out by the position of the sun.

Get a radio scanner and monitor their movements, aim your big gun to it and here you go.

I'll be there on the sunday but am undecided as to which side of the lake as of yet.

My impression:

I guess the northern part of the lake is one of a number of good spots.
I had a quick look on Saturday afternoon and there was still a fence on the southern shores and building activity accross the lake opposite the
Australian War Memorial. So southern shores are not very attractive and also the sun will be on the other side of the lake.
A lot of activity is going to happen on the northern shores of the lake.
It may even be worthwhile considereing Mount Ainslie or Mount Pleasant or so.

I spent all afternoon down at the lake, on the north shore. I think that the North shore is the best part, as that seems to be where they are targeting the display at.

FWIW - They did also mention that the Roulettes are using Mt Stromlo as a holding point. I wouldn't think it would be worth taking pics out there though.

And nothing beats the sound of an FA-18 overhead . . . .

Ozonejunkie - I think the Blackhawk Silhouette in your album is a fantastic shot - well captured. The soldier standing inside really makes it.

CD - great shots as normal. Would we expect anything else from the 70-200 VR?

I'll hopefully get some of my shots processed and posted tonight (after discovering that I have a very visible dust bunny in every shot )

I was really happy with the Blackhawk silhouette. This was the first time that I have ever really tried panning, and it is certainly not easy.

I have a few more pics that I haven't got around to processing yet, but I will post a link to them in the future.

the weekend was awsome!
I was there on Saturday and Sunday and managed to get over 2.5GB of photos, (taken in JPG Large Fine),
Sunday started out all-right but then the stupid clouds came in, I haven't had a chance to have a good look at my photos, but will start posting some in the near future, (when time permits).

yeah well they caught me too, i was expecting them to run across the lake from west to east.. waiting for them to come, then hear them coming from behind.. *crap* readjust camera, press remote and hope for the best

Looking at the lovely blue background that most of my photos from Sunday lack.

Also, does anybody have some really good photos of the Roulettes? I got some OK ones, but would love to see what other's managed to make of them?

I got back into Canberra late on Sunday and stumbled across the choppers left for the night in the park. No-one was around except for me, a bunch of helicopters, and a security guard. Quite strange.
