now that I am finally on broadband I will finally get around to downloading a decent file recovery program (free/shareware if possible) - the photo gods have so far been good to me so dont want to push my luck any further

Is PC inspector still one of the best freebies?

Don't know about the freebies, but one of the best commercial data recovery programs is GetDataBack (FAT or NTFS). I have been using it for years, it has saved me a few times - well worth the money in my opinion.

Yep GetBackData is certainly worth the money, works every time even after a full format of the drive.
I tried most of the free stuff and it's nothing compared to GBD.
Just buy it, end of story!

RescuePRO that comes on a mini disk with Sandisk CF cards worked very well on the only occasion I had to use it.

is this just a recent thing with the the Sandisk CFs - I have a couple of older genuine CF cards but don't recall any mini disk.

as a beginner I think the getdataback program looks a bit full on - I would probably just take my PC back to my local guy who has done some upgrades and repairs

I use Recover4All with good success, provided I haven'd kept using the card/disk and overwritten the data

I've only bought 1 Sandisk CF card, earlier this year, 2GB. It came with that, included in the package, so I cant say how long thet have been sending them out.

Have a go with filescavenger as well

Bad Copy Pro http://www.jufsoft.com/badcopy/?rid=BadCopy&vid=3.80 has worked for me. I had a customer come to me to print some files on her SD card. She had 438 files on the card and NO backup. The card was corrupt, but all were recovered okay.
