Strictly composition?

Going back and re-learning how to use a camera so this week I am falling back strictly on composition, well at least in my book.
Member: smac(Stuart) gave me a tip on how to get the D2x to exceed the 250/100 flash shutter sync barrier with the sb800, I used a shutter of 2000 to get this image of my hand in the bright sun with the flash on manual mode and orange gel attached. ISO 100 f4 24mm white balance 4200K. I was aiming for a stylish look.
Same settings just held the camera in front of me and clicked, this time i didn't get the nice sparkly shine on my face.
At Hyde Park used the infra red filter because i couldn't get a balanced exposure conventionally, although there is still time to learn. 15 secs f8 ISO200 12mm
Same settings at the botanical gardens
