Canoeing

Hello all

I snapped these images recently of my young daughter's first ride in a canoe.

The first is my favourite... handheld with 300mm lens & SB600.

Image

This one was taken without the flash and required some PP to brighten it somewhat. I used DEE in NCE and was quite hard to judge on my laptop screen....

Comments and thoughts appreciated.... :P

Hi,

I think you have captured some nice memories. It is easy to see the exploration and discovery your daughter was experiencing.

To give them a little more punch I would darken the images, add contrast and perhaps a bit of saturation. You may end up with blown hightlights with the water but the image is essentially about the family. One other image that would be good for this series is a landscape shot that includes the full canoe to get the context of the first journey out in the canoe.

Cheers,

Hi Gecko,

I'll lead by example and give you some feedback. Sorry you have had to wait so long and ask again!

Subject matter will not be everyone's cup of tea but probably great images for you and your family.

I think they are a little flat for my liking. Looks to me as if they need more contrast and punch (as Jordan has mentioned). Your laptop monitor might be throwing you off, they often display much greater intensity than is actually in the image.

Hi Gecko,
Looks like you have future member of the (female) oarsome foursome on your hands! :D I agree with the other posters about the contrast though esp with pic 2 - it is quite "bland" (excuse the bluntness, I couldn't think of a better word :? ). Maybe cropping out some of the colourless looking water would help with pic 2 as well.

Cheers

Nice pics. I'm a open canoe guy too.

Not often you see a decent canoe in Aust.

What is yours (looks like a Dagger from the gunwales)

We have a Dagger Reflection 14 - a bit of a tub but stable so it's great for family/kids or solo/photgraphy.

Hello hardware

The boat here is not a dagger (but you could be forgiven for thinking that it is). It actually a Rosco - made here in Brisbane. A very nice craft to paddle, though I tend to spend more time in a sea kayak.

Good to hear from another paddler and would be interested to see some of your images.

Cheers
