The Museo de Ciencias Naturales (National Science Museum) in Madrid has a collection of early human skulls on display. These remains come from Atapuerca, a site of caves near Burgos in northern Spain, known for the abundant human (genus Homo) remains discovered there beginning in 1976. The cave called Sima de los Huesos (“Pit of the Bones”), where more than 1,600 human fossils, including several nearly complete skulls, have been found. The age of this material is at least 300,000 years and may be as old as 600,000 years. The brain cavity sizes of this fossils are within the range of both Neanderthals and modern humans. Wouldn't you like to look that good 600,000 years from now.
