took these in January

1st shot was a combination of a few different exposures to try and keep the orange in the sky

Beautiful shot (#2) of an icon which is so difficult to shoot without it being a cliche. Nice work indeed.

Cheers

Any chance you could tell us/me the settings you used for #2?

Taking a guess here (trying to solidify my understanding of all this fun stuff):

- doesn't seem to be much noise in there from what I can tell with this res, so low ISO is guess #1 (200? 400?)

- water doesn't seem exceptionally crisp, so perhaps a slow shutter speed in favour of a higher f/stop?

alternatively a faster shutter speed and full open on aperture with focus set to infinity?

Does infinity focus change the depth of field on a landscape shot like this? That's my only real point of confusion at the moment ... :-)

Cheers

EXIF is attached with the image but here tis.

Model = Canon EOS 30D
Exposure Time = 3.2"
F Number = F13
Exposure Program = Aperture priority
ISO Speed Ratings = 320
Exposure Bias Value = -0.67EV
Focal Length = 30mm

Hart good observations, i didnt want the longer exposure simply because i hate the effect it has on the sky (in my experience it becomes very whitish yellow) as its letting more light in so bumped up the ISO a fraction to keep the speed to a minimum, i probably could have used a wider f/stop but was trialing a few things to see the results so shot at f/13.

"Does infinity focus change the depth of field on a landscape shot like this? That's my only real point of confusion at the moment "

dont think it would as my focused area was all at the same distance (i think thats correct).

D'oh! My brain wants a refund for working so hard when the answer was right under my nose. Maybe I won't install that exif plugin in Firefox just yet ... at least until I've learned more :-)

good observations

Ta - I felt warm and fuzzy getting close to the right answer :-)

Roll on March 10th so I can get on with real practice!

Cheers

I like both, the silhouette of the first one makes a good print or even postcard. The second one is more orthodox and will be enjoyable by most of the people though I think, but the clouds in them are great!
