First macro attempts with Nikon 105/2.8

At the Canberra micro-meet yesterday, I was fortunate (that might turn out to be an unfortuate :D ) enough to borrow MHD's Micro-Nikkor 105mm 2.8. What a lens!

I think this will turn out to have been a big mistake as I really enjoyed using it :) (once I got the wobbles under control, flash working and came to terms with essentially no DOF at all! )

these are my first attempts at macro photography, so C&C is most welcome!

All are at 1:1 reproduction, MF and under Scott's instruction of "hit it with plenty of flash" from the SB-800.

Nice work Daniel.

Personally, I would prefer to see more areas in focus - I notice the smallest aperture you used was f14 - see how you go with f22 and smaller though you'll have to compensate with lighting and perhaps even upping the ISO.

Would have been nice to see the tip of the leaf in the first shot too!

Great start to this highly addictive style of photography.

Hi Daniel,

these shots came out very good considering
you were balancing the camera in one hand, the flash in the other hand.
You were also rocking forwards and backword to find the focus on a leaf that the wind was moving :shock

Cheers,
CD

Manta, thanks for the feedback. I think you're right - maybe should have stopped down a bit more and hit it with the SB800 harder :D

there's a bit to learn with this macro thing :)

CD - in other words... good luck rather than good management
lets say my macro style needs work - and maybe one of those A-S slide plate set ups, and a A-S plate mount, and... A macro lens! (sigh, the most wanted list just got longer).

dont mind the first. simple and effective.

Agree with the others about stopping down more.
