Heaps of trouble with blown reds!!

Paul that King Parrot looks way off, the reds look really blown and the greens look very dark. I'm guessing this was Grants Picnic Ground?

No matter what I seem to do I can't seem to get the colours of this thing right. Dunno if it's camera settings or my Post processing skills.

All the shots of these guys came out like this

It wasn't at Grant's Picnic ground... Not sure exactly sure where it was but it was further along than that. The cockatoos were at Grant's

Just looking up pics on the net of King Parrots and the ones I was shooting were different from most if not all of the ones I can find on the net...

.. The reds were definately a lot deeper and brighter than the ones I was shooting and the greens were a lot darker than the pics on the net.

Did I get the ID right? I can't see anything else it could be.

Hmmm....just posted that the ID is wrong but perhaps there is variations between male/female or from juv->adult?

I think that's the female you are describing though isn't it? And the male is as I've (sorta) photographed.

I've never been very good at ID's though so I could be wrong. But that's definately the closest I can find in my bird book.

Edit: yes, you're right. I just had to look up the ID on the net as my book is shipped overseas.

Are you using your flash at all on that king parrot shot?

Yep there was flash dialed in at -2EV.

I got my Better Beamer today as well so I can't wait to get out and use that

I think it will help, you probably want around -2 to -1 1/3 I'd say. The problem with Parrots and the likes is that the flash tends to really overly saturate them when you look at it on your computer after so be careful.

Have you got a flash bracket yet? If not let me know how you go without one. You might start to find that the eyes start to get steel eye.

I have had that issue before also and not just digital but with film also, I tried to allevite by exposing on a different area such as the tree trunk or leaves.

Of course I didn't have a massive lens!

I use my Wimberly Macro Bracket for all my telephoto flash stuff.

If it proves too hard to position the flash + BB in the right direction with that then I'll look into the RRS one. I'm guessing you have to be more accurate with flash position with the BB attached.

when I got my beamer, I decided to "calibrate it"

As part of my beamer review, I set the camera up on a tripod and fired a few shots at a fence with a known target. basically I added the velcro shims so that the flash pattern corresponds to what is in the viewfinder.

I also put it on and off a few times to test repeatability.
having done that I marked the position of the velro tie where it goes around the sb800 (again for repeatability) that way I always put the beamer on the sb800 the same way and the pattern should stay as I originally set it up.

I agree with Kipper and others that the reds look way too saturated and these pics look over-sharpened as well. Don't know whats happening here?

King parrot is an adult male. Female is mostly all green while the young male is same as adult female but with lime green marking on the wings.

If I try desaturating the reds it just goes gross (too tired to think of any other way to describe it )

Will give it another go tomorrow arvo. For now it's bed time
