Took this shot of a neighbour's orchid and turned it into a "pop out"
There is a tad blown highlight in the petals but they are white!

Hi Sheila,
I have absolutely loved your work so far (and have commented as much) but this one unfortunately doesn't do it for me. Like you said, highlights blown-out a bit, a bit too contrasty/shadowy and slightly soft. Would have been good with diffused lighting, but thats not always possible. Like what you were trying to achieve with 'pop out', though.
Cheers

I think the concept does work.
I believe that the blown highlights are what kills this shot.
If the orchid wasnt brilliant white or the highlights weren't blown.
worth continuing with!

Another suggestion on pop-outs is to add a drop shadow - this will make it pop in a more 3D way

Try changing the matt board from black to very light gray...or some other colour. Then I think it will work much a lot better.
