I use a penlight to let me see the toad and not spook it, it gives me just enuf light to manually focus (i always manual focus on Macro) and then its flashed up with the sb800 with the diffuser fitted.. and get as low to the ground as possible without sinking my head into the mud or getting the camera wet and muddy.. shooting at f22 and 100th shutter speed.. SB800 on TTL...

Ever played with bubble wrap?? you get the fun of making it go pop.. and squeezing them so they make a louder noise.....

Toads are the same.. they go pop when ya hit em.. unfortunately.. if ya dont run over them clean... they have a nasty habit of being able to swallow there guts and keep on going...

Scary init? frogs and toads have the ability to regurgitate there stomachs to get rig of things they cant digest or dont like.. unfortunately it makes toads hard to kill because someones when you run over them, they spit there guts up and look dead, they arent, they just getup, swallow there guts and keep on jumpin along

PS If you are hitting them with anything wear safety glasses, as the poison glands can squirt and it can do some real damage if it hits your face.
