Very nice shots, but I thought bats were flying around at night time?

It appears that #2 is a male...

Cheers
Steffen.

Thanks Steffen - bats fly out of wherever they've roosted at dusk, and go out to feed... we have a huge Chinese Elm (bloody weed) growing next door, and the bats come into the tree to feed on the berries at night. When they've finished feeding, they'll fly back to their roost at dawn :) And yes, he is definitely a boy - but has retracted his penis. When they are 'hanging out', they reach all the way down to their chest.... I'll see if I have a photo of one

Thanks Mark & John :) Really appreciate you taking the time to have a look ... they are fascinating little buggers. Many of the bats last night were very very young, and were playing in the trees, and basically belting the s**t out of eachother - entertaining to me at least :)

Marco - will definitely find you guys a shot of a 'displaying' male, most defintely NOT jewish :) ;)

Tim - sorry to hear about the dog... is everything ok??

Chris - would have been a seriously scary portrait !!!!! Running around the backyard with a headlamp on, trying to focus on the bats over the fence, and ducking back inside between downpours :) The neighbours kept looking out the window to see what the hell was going on - have to apologise later, and warn them that I'll do the same thing tonight :?

Bernie - you've met me, so know it would be a scary portrait - even more so seeing I have to check that all of the snacks are ok, so am slightly rotund :) :D

And finally to Darryl - thanks for looking :) Have to ask - what on earth do you get up for at that time of the morning? Then again, I get up at 4 to go to work, but I'm crazy :) ;)

Cheers everyone
Rel

Much better shots than my last attempt... the buggers wouldn't stay still for me and their eyes kept coming out bright orange reflecting from the cocos palm fruit they were feeding on !!!

Rel, well sunrise here are the moment is around 5.50-6.00am. The first hour or two at sunrise and the last hour or two at night are the best times for photographing birds :)

Where I was photographing today, and usually most of the places that I go to are around 1-1.5hrs worth of travel from home. This requires getting up at ungodly hours and getting home at stupid times of night. I do really prefer sunny winter days as sunrise is later, and sunset is earlier so I can pursue this hobbie at more sane hours :)
