NZ Tui and a Trout

Fish is so so, but the bird is a great capture. What is the white thing on its neck?

Part of his male plumage - gives them their nickname of the Parson Bird ;) . The Tui is one of the more pretty birds here (IMHO), and has a wonderful song. They're nectar drinkers, about the size of lorrikeet.

How close did you get to the trout? Were you in Rotorua? I believe 1 Dec was opening of trout season. The creeks and streams are chock full of the fish, they're so easily spooked though. DId you use a polarising filter?

Why has that blackbird got a clove of garlic around his neck? Is that something normal in NZ? Did you kill the fish and eat it? :shock: :shock: :shock: :shock:

No, didn't keep the fish, it was in a wildlife park - same place as the lion cubs (I think they may feed the lions fish rather than possum ;) ). Here's a couple of others from there:
