Howdy all, I have finally decided to commit myself to a date for the coffee and beer lunch meet.

Details are (subject to change and laziness):

1. Coffee and roasting demo (Barista Matty Jacobs may also have his machine/grinder available too, if we are lucky and he is available for that day).
2. Lunch at Epoch Belgian Beer Cafe (Cammeray).
3. Wander down to Tunks Park and other areas around there.

The only Saturday date available for me before Christmas is the 9th December. Others have mentioned another event on that day, so if this clashes too much with that, we can defer this to the new year, however, I have put up a poll for that date.

Yep, the machine has an inbuilt self-destruct mechanism that prevents it from being mishandled - it starts to produce Starbucksish type coffee and then implodes on itself.

Hey Pat,

I voted coffee and lunch - but this is pending permission, and depending on my work situation at the time. 'Tis a hectic term, and I may be feeling incredibly exhausted on that day. I may also be booked out with work, but I'm hopeful. At the least, I'll be pretty tired. But there and pulling shots, dammit!

What happens to you when you drink at starbucks is more the question.

I usually end up going home with a bad stomach. The Starbucks on Oxford St. in Darlinghurst has me concerned it serves not-very-good milk. Their milk drinks always give me stomach problems, but none of the other Starbucks do.

I don't think I will start a *$ bashing exercise on this thread - let's just go for Gloria Jeans instead.

At the end of the day, if numbers are low, we can always forego the lunch and spend more time talking about, making, roasting and drinking coffee in a more 'intimate' environment.

Patrick, I would love to come for the coffee but have things on in the afternoon and evening. Didn't want to put my name down and do a runner after coffee, taking a spot from someone else. If numbers are low would love to come for coffee

Seriously, it is looking like the better option is simply a coffee bonanza for people to stick around for as long as they can and skip the lunch part. If this is the case, I might suggest a 10am kickoff with a 12:30 or 1pm p#$$ off (so I can go watch my cricket team play).

Patrick, the tea drinker and the coffee drinker are still interested in coming if there is space for us both!

Ok, so here's what we are going to do (to summarise my previous posts):

1. Meet at Cafe Reschsmooth (Crows Nest) at 10am
2. Crank out some coffees, and (assuming Matty J is able and willing to bring his machine) run a bit of a side-by-side test of two different machines.
3. Run a roasting demo and then compare the difference between very, very freshly roasted coffee and 'rested' coffee.
4. Try to show how to pour different forms of latte art.

This should be able to be wrapped up by 1pm easily (people are free to leave anytime earlier if needed).

Given this, we will not be doing the Epoch lunch at this time. Therefore, any reference in the poll to lunch should be ignored.

Confirmation that I'm in

Pat; sounds good. I'm happy to bring my machine and grinder - no doubt that two different groupheads/basket/portafilter types will require different grind settings, so with one grinder we'll be stuffing around all day trying to dial in shots.

I was wondering if it would be cool if I got there say half an hour earlier to help you setup, get my machine warm and toasty etc.

Also, we'll need to factor in that my machine runs from an external 12L tank (so refills are rare), and the drip tray drains to a 9L container (so emptying is rare), which will need to sit lower than the machine ... I put up some pics on coffeegeek once, in the espresso shrines thread ... you'll need to scroll down to my three photos, to get an idea... the lines from the drip tray and to the reservoir are long enough to sit them on the floor though.

Pat, do you guys have a recommended sleeping pill after that much caffeine? I won't be able to sleep till Monday

That shouldn't be a problem - I have a fold out table which has a hole in the middle through which you can run the pipes - I hope it should be sturdy enough. Regardless of which, we will be able to sort something out.

We have to ensure:

1. We don't get our Pullman tampers mixed up.
2. You don't steal any of my illy cups

Getting there half an hour early will be fine. I won't be able to roast coffee the weekend before, it will have to be two weeks before - so you may want to bring some as well, to 'compare and contrast'.

We can confirm details closer to the date.

To all, I will pm details (address, etc) closer to the date to those who have confirmed they are coming.

Glen - the perfect solution to that is a glass of a big Barossa shiraz at lunch time, in the sun!

Point 1 won't be a problem. My wife got a nice message engraved on my tamp, and even if your wife did too, I doubt they would say the same thing.

Point 2 shouldn't be a problem. I'm not into stealing, though I am open to donations.

I'll buy a kilo of beans if you provide milk. I'll get some from Hazel, and make sure they're ready to peak on the day. (Hazel's good like that). And we can divvy up what's left.

Unless your name and birthday is exactly the same as mine (which I think it is not), then we shouldn't get the tampers mixed up.

Beans from Hazel sound good - I will make sure you aren't out of pocket for any remainder that are divvied up.

I'd be keen to come along... happy to bring a breville popper... also happy to lift an illy cup or three if mattyj feels he'd rather not... lol.  btw... have either of you checked out the Compak K3 grinder?

Michael, you could try to lift any of the illy cups....

Haven't heard of the Compak grinder, although that doesn't mean it isn't a good grinder - whatever you buy, make sure you have available good after sales service.

I've heard of the Compak K3 grinder, but know nothing about it. Bring it along! Then we'll have a mazzer mini, a macap and the Compak. And after 3 hours of grinding and brewing, we'll come the the amazing conclusion that they're all pretty good.

If Leon is going to be there then I better go along too. Someone needs to keep an eye on him.

Mattyj... I haven't actually got one... but in need of a decent grinder and new versions of the Compaks are hitting the market right now so it's always good to convas some views of anyone who might have played with one. Both the mazzers and macaps are just about impossible to source right now and certainly hard if you're particular about the model and colour.

Michael, you need to think laterally - that little tamper on the front of a grinder is an obvious, visual clue to not order a coffee from that establishment. (But then again, so is a green mermaid)

Nothing more to say on this topic at this point apart from that I should get back to work - clients don't (read: shouldn't) advise themselves.

One thing - those who have indicated they are going to come along, can you please ensure you put a vote down so I can keep a tally on how many people my wife can expect will descend upon our place? (Please note the lunch is not going on - just coffee, I don't know how to edit polls).

Probably not a good way of keeping track. We can't change what we voted, so I can't (for instance) change to say yes I am coming rather than no I can't
Suggest you list who you think is coming, and we can then advise if it's right or wrong - you can then edit the list as we get closer
